What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
It is used to stimulate Lymph flow through triggering the receptors in the vessel walls by the therapist using a combination of fingertips/light palm with the overall aim being to drain the lymph to the appropriate node(s) by clearing the pathways. It is extremely gentle, flowing, rhythmic massage which promotes a deep level of relaxation.
Unlike other types of massage Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses very little pressure as the vessels are very superficial.
What will each session involve?
During manual lymphatic drainage no oil or wax is used on the skin, the therapist uses the soft pads of their fingers placed flat directly on the clients skin and moves them very gently using a combination of: stationery circles, push and stretch, pumping, rocking and compression-relaxation technique. Direction, rhythm and gentle pressure are always very important when working with lymph encouraging lymph to flow to the relevant nodes. The pressure is much less than even a Swedish type massage with the aim of treatment being to drain/assist with lymphatic flow.
Who would benefit from this type of treatment?
Manual lymphatic drainage is beneficial for boosting the immune system as it promotes immune system activity, facilitate general feelings of health and vitality; improving appearance of the skin and reduce puffiness caused by water retention, poor circulation or pregnancy; help with pain from fractures, sprains and rheumatism promoting body’s own healing mechanisms. Therefore people who have the following conditions may benefit: regular common illnesses like colds/flu needing a boost to their immune system; ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome); Migraines; Digestive problems; Stress, anxiety or tension; Acne, Rosacea and other skin conditions; Fibromyalgia in need of some pain relief/rest.
Due to the nature of this treatment and the types of individuals who may benefit from MLD, appointment lengths can vary depending on personal needs. Therefore it is important to call me to fully discuss what would be most appropriate for you based on your medical history and areas of your body in need of MLD.
